College of Nursing

Dean: Ramona Benkert

The Wayne State University College of Nursing is regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized for educating undergraduate and graduate students as competent, compassionate, and evidence-driven practitioners and scholars in the nursing profession. The College prepares nurses who apply knowledge from the liberal arts, natural and social sciences, and the discipline of nursing to promote health, prevent disease, and improve outcomes across populations and care settings.

The College is committed to research and scholarly activity that advances nursing science, improves health outcomes, and strengthens health equity in alignment with the AACN Essentials (2021). Our programs integrate knowledge for nursing practice (Domain 1) with a focus on person-centered care (Domain 2), population health (Domain 3), and scholarship for the nursing discipline (Domain 4). Students are educated to apply principles of quality and safety (Domain 5), collaborate through interprofessional partnerships (Domain 6), and engage in systems-based practice (Domain 7) to ensure high-quality, equitable care delivery.

As a discipline and a profession, nursing at Wayne State University reflects both the art and science of caring. Students learn to apply informatics and healthcare technologies (Domain 8) to support clinical decision-making, model professionalism grounded in integrity, civility, accountability, and cultural humility (Domain 9), and demonstrate leadership and self-reflection as part of their ongoing personal and professional development (Domain 10).

Learners from diverse backgrounds enter the College to begin or continue their education and thereby enrich the learning environment. The faculty supports the right of students to engage in inquiry, reflection, and dialogue as essential processes for developing clinical judgment and advancing nursing knowledge. Ongoing evaluation by both students and faculty ensures continuous improvement and maintains the integrity of the program.

As members of the academic and professional community, the faculty of the College of Nursing are committed to advancing nursing through teaching, research, practice, and service. The faculty uphold academic freedom, shared governance, and the continual integration of new knowledge into practice. Through scholarship, professional engagement, and community partnerships, the faculty enhances the reputation of the College and the University locally, nationally, and internationally.
