Moldmaking is a traditional sculptural craft. Today, many new materials are available for application, many are experimental and are continuously in development. The traditional craft itself poses many challenges to students, and the use of new materials compounds these challenges.
An unguided novice moldmaker will risk destroying the original object to be molded, and costly materials can easily and quickly be wasted. Many sculpture students are only introduced to moldmaking in a cursory way, and they avoid the process because of the high failure rate and cost that must be faced to build experience. A course devoted to moldmaking will scaffold experiences for students in order to help them gain necessary experience of materials and process, without unnecessary cost.
