The Patient Care Lab sequence is a series of 4 courses that span the first year of pharmacy school (P1-winter semester) through the third year of pharmacy school (P3-fall semester). The Patient Care Lab sequence (PCL 1-4) is designed to allow students to begin to develop the direct patient care and pharmacy practice skills they will need to become successful practitioners. Costs for this particular course series continues to rise with the increasing costs of medication and supplies we have to order and maintenance required for our equipment. After schoolyear 2018-19, an evaluation of course costs related to consumables (products used in course), video recording and monitoring systems, and standardized patients was completed and used to anticipate this year's cost (anticipated at $80/student/course). Lastly, there is a projected increase in cost for standardized patients based on the notification we received from the medical school skills center.
These labs require a variety drug and medical supplies to be purchased from medical supply companies and a local hospital. The lab also maintains software for training students in proper patient assessment and communications, a video recording system to document and review student performance in patient assessment and communications exercises, and medical supplies and devices to duplicate the real-life experiences students will be exposed to later in the curriculum. Lastly, for this course, standardized patients are used for multiple assessments in both a formative and summative manner so students' communication and technical skills can be evaluated.
Specific examples of items needed to support these courses include:
Supplies purchased to help students learn how to dispense or compound medication:
• Empty prescription vials, labels, and liquid/oral dosage forms of medications
• IV medications and bags, needles, syringes, sharps disposal equipment, isopropol alcohol and related cleaning equipment, chemotherapy mats and laminar air-flow hood elements, gloves, sterile gowns, shoe covers, and hair covers, to support teaching students the basics of aseptically compounding sterile IV admixtures
• Creams and ointment bases and drugs such as hydrocortisone to support teaching students the basics of extemporaneously compounding topical products.
Supplies purchased to help students learn about drug administration, patient assessment and patient consultation:
•IV bags and administration sets, needles and disposables for electromechanical infusion control devices
•Pulmonary drug administration devices (inhalers, nebulizers and compressors)
•Eye drops and ear drops
•Insulin syringes and diabetic supplies
Software, video, and related equipment and supplies that are maintained for these courses include:
•Vitalograph machines and disposables
•Otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes and disposable supplies
•Patient disposable gowns, exam table covering, gloves, masks soap and hand sanitizer
•EKG monitoring equipment and software
•KbPort software and maintenance for digital recording system
