MUH 5350 Instrumental Pedagogy Cr. 3

This course is designed to create a greater personal awareness and understanding of one’s own technique and musicianship. Students will learn how to optimize their ability to self-analyze, self-assess, and think pedagogically. Through a deeper understanding of all the varied aspects of the musical performance and self-reflection, students will learn to enhance their own performances, becoming an accomplished performer and teacher in the profession. Further, the course is designed to strengthen students' performances through classroom demonstrations, but also include a variety of ancillary topics, including, but not limited to interpretation, performance anxiety, collaboration, stage presence, student-teacher dynamics and related health issues. This course is designed for students to improve their understanding of vocal pedagogy. Topics include vocal anatomy and function, historical and contemporary approaches to the voice and vocal pedagogy, the "three Rs" (respiration, resonance, and registration), voice categories and the Fach system, vocal exercises for the studio and practice room, and the development of the singing career from the beginning of opera to the present day.
