This course will review normal metabolic pathways and their regulation and then discuss in depth aberrant metabolism as it contributes to or causes diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurodegeneration. MGG 7730 Introduction to Promoting Health Equity in Genetic Counseling Cr. 1

This course aims to introduce learners to how diversity influences access to, the experience with, and utilization of health care, leading to health disparities in under-represented people and what they can do as future genetic counselors to provide inclusive practice and promote health equity. Through didactic instruction, readings, video reviews, discussions, self-assessments, and self-reflection, led by faculty from diverse backgrounds, students will: define diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and related terms; recognize a broad array of aspects of diversity and the role of intersectionality in any individual's lived experiences; describe and recognize one's own implicit and explicit biases; identify microagressions, their impact and strategies for addressing them; and start to develop one's own plan for promoting health equity in genetic counseling.
